Prayer Breakfast
On an annual basis our Monett Chamber of Commerce hosts a prayer breakfast on the first Thursday of May. This is provided by the Monett Ministerial Association and the Kiwanis Club of Monett. The Monett Chamber of Commerce is an apolitical organization that neither encourages nor promotes any religion, but tries to best serve the community and Chamber members. For this reason, we have been co-hosting a prayer breakfast with the Monett Ministerial Alliance for many years.
A brief history of the National Day of Prayer
- 1775
The Continental Congress "designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation" - February 19, 1795
George Washington proclaimed a day of public thanksgiving and prayer - 1808
Thomas Jefferson opposed national days of prayer by the Federal Government - 1813
James Madison proclaimed a day of prayer, then later recanted the action saying "They seem to imply and certainly nourish the erroneous idea of a national religion." - March 30, 1865
Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution which called for a day of fasting and prayer during the Civil War - April 17, 1952
President Harry S. Truman signed a bill proclaiming a National Day of Prayer. Each President would select the day - May 5, 1988
President Ronald Reagan signed a bill which made the first Thursday in May the National Day of Prayer
